Dual SIM with eSIM β€”
Keep Your Number Abroad

How to use your home SIM for calls and an eSIM for travel data at the same time.

One of the best features of eSIM is the ability to run two SIM cards simultaneously β€” your existing home SIM plus a travel eSIM. This means you keep your regular phone number for calls and SMS while using a separate, cheap data plan abroad.

No more choosing between keeping your number or having affordable data. You get both.

What is Dual SIM?

Dual SIM means your phone has two active cellular lines at the same time. In most modern phones, this works as:

πŸ’³
Physical SIM
Your home carrier SIM card in the tray. Handles calls, SMS, and your regular number.
πŸ“²
eSIM
Your Zyroam travel plan. Handles mobile data at local rates. No roaming charges.

Both lines are active simultaneously. Your phone intelligently routes calls through one line and data through the other.

Why Use Dual SIM for Travel?

πŸ“ž
Keep your phone numberReceive calls and SMS verification codes on your regular number β€” essential for banking apps, two-factor authentication, and staying reachable.
πŸ’°
Save 50–90% on dataYour eSIM uses local network rates instead of your home carrier's expensive roaming charges.
πŸ’¬
WhatsApp keeps workingYour WhatsApp stays linked to your home number. Messages and calls go through the eSIM's data β€” free and fast.
πŸ”€
No SIM swappingNo need to remove your home SIM and risk losing it. Both lines coexist in your phone.

Setup on iPhone

After installing your Zyroam eSIM, configure dual SIM like this:

Settings β€Ί Cellular

You'll see two lines listed β€” your primary SIM and your Zyroam eSIM. Set them up as follows:

1
Default Voice Line: Set to your primary SIM (home number). All outgoing calls use this line.
2
Cellular Data: Set to your Zyroam eSIM. All internet traffic uses the cheap travel data.
3
iMessage & FaceTime: Keep on your primary SIM so these stay linked to your number.
4
Data Roaming: Turn ON for the eSIM line only. Keep it OFF on your primary SIM to avoid carrier roaming charges.
⚠️

Turn OFF data roaming on your home SIM. If data roaming is on for both lines, your phone might accidentally use your expensive home carrier for data instead of the eSIM.

Setup on Android (Samsung / Pixel)

Settings β€Ί Connections β€Ί SIM manager
1
Preferred SIM for calls: Select your primary SIM.
2
Preferred SIM for messages: Select your primary SIM.
3
Mobile data: Select your Zyroam eSIM.
4
Data roaming (Settings β†’ Connections β†’ Mobile networks β†’ eSIM): Turn ON.
πŸ””

Samsung quick toggle: Pull down the notification shade and long-press the SIM card icon to quickly switch data between lines without going into Settings.

Managing Your Two Lines

🏠
When you return home: Go back to Settings β†’ Cellular/SIM manager and switch your "Cellular Data" back to your primary SIM. Turn off the eSIM line (or just leave it β€” it won't use data if not set as the data line).
🌍
Next trip: If you kept the eSIM profile, just re-enable it and set it as the data line again. If it's a new destination, install a new eSIM β€” your phone can store 8+ profiles.
πŸ“Š
Monitor data usage: On iPhone, check Settings β†’ Cellular to see data used per line. On Android, check Settings β†’ Connections β†’ Data usage. This helps you track your eSIM consumption separately from your home SIM.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I receive SMS verification codes on my home number while abroad?

Yes β€” your home SIM stays active for calls and SMS. As long as your carrier provides coverage (even limited roaming), SMS codes will arrive normally. This is one of the biggest advantages of dual SIM.

Does keeping both SIMs active drain more battery?

Very slightly β€” maybe 5–10% more than a single SIM. In practice, you won't notice a meaningful difference in daily battery life.

Can I make calls over the eSIM data instead of using my home SIM?

Yes β€” use WhatsApp, FaceTime, Zoom, or Skype calls over the eSIM data. These go through the internet, not through your carrier's voice network, so they're essentially free.

What if my home carrier charges for receiving calls while abroad?

Some carriers charge for incoming calls during roaming. Check with your carrier before traveling. If they charge, you can disable the voice line on your home SIM and only receive calls through WhatsApp/FaceTime on the eSIM data.

Can I use two eSIMs instead of physical SIM + eSIM?

Yes β€” newer iPhones (iPhone 13+) and some Android phones support dual eSIM, meaning both lines can be eSIM profiles. You can have your home carrier as an eSIM and your travel eSIM as the second.
