Getting Started with Zyroam

Everything you need to know before your first eSIM purchase.

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM card built directly into your device. Unlike a physical SIM, it can be activated instantly by scanning a QR code β€” no swapping, no waiting. You can store multiple eSIM profiles on one device and switch between them anytime.

What is an eSIM QR Code?

After purchasing a Zyroam eSIM plan, you will receive a unique QR code by email. Scanning this code with your device's camera installs the eSIM profile automatically. Each QR code can only be used once and on one device, so keep it secure.

Should I buy before or after I reach my destination?

We strongly recommend buying and installing your eSIM before you travel. You can install it while still connected to your home Wi-Fi, and the data validity only starts when your device first connects to a local network at your destination β€” so there is no wasted time.

Can I buy the eSIM for somebody else?

Yes. You can purchase a Zyroam eSIM as a gift or on behalf of another person. Simply forward the QR code email to them after purchase. The QR code must be scanned on the device that will use the eSIM β€” it cannot be transferred once installed.

Can I use a Travel eSIM while keeping my primary number active?

Yes. Most modern smartphones support Dual SIM, meaning your home SIM stays active for calls and SMS while the Zyroam eSIM handles your data abroad. You can set your preferred line for data in your device settings β€” just make sure to select the Zyroam eSIM as the data line when you arrive.

Can I use the same eSIM package in multiple countries?

It depends on the plan. Local plans work in one country only. Regional plans cover a group of countries (e.g. Europe or Asia). Global plans work in 100+ countries worldwide. Check the plan details on the product page before purchasing to confirm which countries are included.

Do I get a phone number with calls and SMS?

Zyroam eSIMs are data-only plans β€” they do not include a local phone number, voice calls, or SMS. Your primary SIM card remains active for calls and texts. For messaging abroad, we recommend using internet-based apps such as WhatsApp, iMessage, or Telegram over your Zyroam data connection.

Can I use hotspot / tethering with my eSIM?

Hotspot support depends on the specific plan. Most Zyroam plans allow personal hotspot so you can share your data connection with a laptop or tablet. This will be noted clearly on the plan details page. Using hotspot will consume your data allowance faster, so factor that into your plan choice.

Can I use the eSIM on my smartwatch?

Zyroam eSIMs are designed for smartphones and tablets only. Smartwatch eSIM support uses a different technology (GSMA consumer eSIM for wearables) that is not compatible with our travel data plans. Check our device compatibility list for a full list of supported devices.

Is my phone eSIM compatible?

Most iPhones from XS (2018) onwards support eSIM. On Android, brands like Samsung (S20+), Google Pixel (3+), and many others are compatible. The easiest way to check is to go to Settings β†’ About (or Cellular) and look for a "Digital SIM" or "eSIM" option. You can also check our full device compatibility guide.
